Jillian Bradley (ED Tech 2100) found this site... her search inspired, I hope, by my reference to the many hats teachers wear. This author is so much more elegant in his praise of the multifaceted nature of teaching than I am. Notice that 'computer expert' is the only reference to technology that I've found.
School of Education at Johns Hopkins University-The Many Hats of a Teacher:

+ This article is really interesting. I love how the author was actually able to make an alphabetized list of the jobs that teachers have to do. It really looks a lot more complicated and overwhelming when you see all of a teacher's responsibilities written out in a list but when you actually look at the descriptions of each responsibility with examples of how they appear in a classroom, it's easy to see how they all fit together.
ReplyDelete+ I love this article! It couldn't be more true.
ReplyDeleteHilarious and very well thought out! I totally agree that the teacher plays all those roles/wears all those hats! The "Dental Assistant" is a little weird, but I love that the author calls it like it is. I thought the "Operator of Technology" really hit home with this course.
ReplyDelete"Gone are the days of the 16mm films, where intricate threading skills are handy when the film jumps from its assigned sprockets. Gone are the days of the slide projector, where a penny could mean the difference between a jammed slide or a correct slide." Like I've stated before, it's truly amazing how far we have come in technology.
+ Well thought out writing. I agreed with all that it said. Teachers play all those roles without even realizing it at times. Most don't realize how much a teacher can do for a student.
ReplyDelete+ Wow! What a cool page. I really liked this quote:
ReplyDelete"But have you sketched out a plan that involved 120 students, 30 Bunsen burners, 60 Petri dishes and several liters of hydrochloric acid, recently? Do you know where everything goes and where everyone should be standing at any given moment? No?
Planning, planning, planning, oh, and planning."
I think this is so true. It's a rather daunting task to plan out an entire year of instruction, with all the little things often overlooked. However, it is possible, and expected and if done thoroughly will result in a productive year for students and the teacher.
+ I like that this article allowed us as future teachers to see all the roles that we will have to take on as teachers. Most of the roles that were written about never even crossed my mind. Being a teacher is a lot of responsibility.
ReplyDelete+ What a great article. This is so true. Teachers wear so many different hats everyday!!! I sure do have a lot of rules coming up when I start my first classroom.
ReplyDelete+ I absolutely love this article! It was so creative and cute! All of it was true. Teachers have so many roles, many of which we don't realize we take on and it is a huge responsibility!
ReplyDelete+ So true! I love the doctor and bailiff. There are so many hidden talents and "hats" that we wear and need to switch to rather quickly. Think of how many "hats" you put on in one day?
ReplyDelete+ Too funny! I especially had to laugh at the "attorney" section.
ReplyDelete+I love this article! The guy is a genius. Parents need to read this so we know how much we do and how demanding and versatile our jobs are going to be. I especially liked the Binder - duct tape is fantastic
